Between 2001-2004, funding from the California Mathematics Professional Development Institute supported LUCIMATH (Local School Districts, UCLA and the California County Offices of Education Institutes in MATHematics). While funding for LUCIMATH no longer exists, work from LUCIMATH spawned two programs currently operating within the UCLA Department of Mathematics.

The UCLA Math Content Program for Teachers (MCPT) offers mathematics courses to teachers who wish to increase their competence and confidence in school mathematics. Coursework may be applied towards a Subject Matter Authorization to teach middle school mathematics. Some of the best of the teacher professional development materials developed through LUCIMATH are included in this program.

Introduction to Algebra is a full year course aimed at preparing California’s low achieving 8th grade students for algebra. Program development began in 2005, and the program is on track for submission to the 2007 California adoption review process as an algebra readiness program. Professional development, which is essential for this program, includes some LUCIMATH components.
